About Dr. Greg House

Born 22 December, 1959 to parents John and Blythe House, an only child, he was raised in a strict household with his father being in the Marines, who rarely had much time for him as a result. His mother doted on him a lot, which made House feel smothered by her particularly during his teenhood and when he was accepted into Michigan University in the summer of 1977, he was more than glad to get away from his home and start making a life for himself.

He completed his studies with a High Distinction in Michigan’s Graduate programme in the early ‘80s and began to practice medicine in the summer of 1984, where he landed himself several jobs in various Teaching Hospitals around the east coast of America. Due to his unfortunate lack of bedside manner, House found himself fired from four different jobs by administrators who were more concerned about his lack of bedside manner than his actual skill as an astute diagnostician.

In the fall of 1995, House met his girlfriend Stacy, a lawyer, whom he moved in with after only a week of being with her. It was a tumultuous relationship of ups and downs that eventually ran through its greatest trial when, in the spring of 1996, House was diagnosed with an infarction in his right thigh. He was treated at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital by college friend and soon-to-be boss, Dr. Lisa Cuddy (who attended Michigan when House was in the Graduate Programme).

A four-day blockage led to severe necrosis of thigh muscle, and after the clot was removed he requested to be put under a chemical-induced coma to sleep through the worst of the pain, where Stacy -- against his will -- took over as his health care proxy and ordered for the dead tissue to be removed. He has lived in constant pain and with an affected limp ever since. Due to the pain, he was put on prescription drug Vicodin, which he found himself rapidly becoming addicted to as a means of being able to cope with his pain.

In the winter of 1997, he was hired by Dr. Cuddy, Chief of Medicine, to work at Princeton-Plainsboro, the only administrator who since has not fired him for his appalling bedside manner. He was quickly promoted to Head of Diagnostics, where he continued to run a tight, able department of diagnosing uncommon infectious diseases and difficult medical cases. In 2000, he and Stacy finally called it quits, the effect of the infarction being too much of a strain on their relationship to keep going. Though his bedside rep is far from acceptable, his reputation as doctor precedes him.

He has only one friend that has stuck by him through thick and thin, no matter how much of an asshole he’s been, and that’s Dr. James Wilson, dubbed by House as Wonderboy. There is only other person who has consistently stuck by him regardless as to whether he deserves it or not and that is his boss, Lisa Cuddy. Her tolerance for him has led to speculation throughout the hospital the nature of an external relationship between them, and that’s never been helped by House’s loudmouthed announcements of their “sex life”.

In the winter of 2005, unexpectedly, his ex-girlfriend Stacy reappeared in his life, with her husband Mark Warner. The original reason for her return was due to the fact that Mark was sick and had been to many doctors around the country, all of which could not diagnose nor treat his condition, hence Stacy came to House as a last resort. She since landed herself a job at PPTH as the hospital’s legal attorney. House has since then been battling unresolved issues and feelings for her.

Dr. House stands at 6’3” tall, weighing roughly 175lbs, was very athletic before his infarction and was an avid lacrosse player in his younger years. He loves monster truck rallies, Hitchcock film noirs, football, baseball, basketball, Sam Adams beer, sweet and sour chicken, reuben sandwiches, Angelina Jolie, “General Hospital”, he occasionally watches “The O.C.”. He plays the piano affluently, and can sing -- he is partial to composing music in his spare time. He loves The Who, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler, David Bowie, The Police and other such 60s, 70s and 80s-esque bands and musicians. Most of all, he loves his motorcycle, which he has tailor-made to his disability with a clip attached to the side where he can store his cane when he rides.

He used to own a rat called Steve McQueen, which he acquired when he paid a visit to Stacy’s place and caught the rat scurrying about in her loft, however the rat died from cancer-related illness. He hasn’t since got a new pet.
